Palm Springs Short Film Festival starts on Thursday Augsut 21st

Palm Springs Short Film Festival is a lot of fun. I have attended the Palm Springs Short Film Festival before. The winning film automatically is entered in the Academy Awards as a short film finalist.

Being a more casual film festival, you will sometimes see famous producers, directors, and movie stars in the audience.

The film festival starts this Thursday August 21st and runs to Friday August 29th.

Here is some more information:

"Sundance of short films' comes to Palm Springs
Star-studded event features 317 screenings

Palm Springs film enthusiasts can get their fix of original movies and Hollywood stars starting next week.

The Palm Springs International Short Film Festival and Film Market begins Thursday and continues through Aug. 27 at Camelot Theatres, 2300 E. Baristo.

Known as the ShortFest, the 14th annual event will feature films directed by actresses Kate Hudson and Kirsten Dunst and others starring Jessica Biel, Rainn Wilson, Winona Ryder, Dana Delany, David Arquette, Kurt Russell and Tony Shalhoub.

The ShortFest program is posted on the Palm Springs International Film Society's Web site, http://www.psfilmfest.org and tickets are now on sale.

The festival has been called “the Sundance of short film festivals” because of its appeal to the U.S. film industry. More than 2,700 entries were considered.

Of the 317 films that will be screened during the festival, there will be 53 world premieres, 47 North American and 24 U.S. premieres.

Biel, who was recognized as the 2007 Palm Springs International Film Festival's Rising Star for her role in “The Illusionist,” is expected to attend ShortFest with “Hole in the Paper Sky,” a film she produced and stars in.

Bill Pullman, best known for his role as President Whitmore in 1996's “Independence Day,” also will attend the festival as a juror and instructor of a master class.

The festival has grown to a record size, with 200 more entries in the marketplace than last year, said festival executive director Darryl Macdonald.

The Opening Night: Shortsplash will take place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Its lineup includes short films that have won awards at some of the key festivals and film events around the world, according to the Palm Springs ShortFest Web site."

Palm Springs and modernist architecture

Palm Springs has more modernist architecture per capita than any other city in the US.

Albert Frey is one of the famous modernist architects of Palm Springs. He designed around 200 properties.

Time magazine just had an article about how people can rent modernist homes. There are also a number of modernist hotels that you can stay at. The most famous boutique resort is the 17 room Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa. There site is http://sunnyfun.comHere's the story:

"Renting Frank Sinatra's House

It was the city where the Rat Pack partied, Elvis honeymooned and Eisenhower swung the only hole in one of his life. Palm Springs, California's fabled desert oasis, has long been a winter playground for the Hollywood set; the city lies just 100 miles (160 km) east of Los Angeles. But it is also home to an extensive array of beautifully preserved Modernist structures that have turned this golf-and-cocktails resort town into a must-see destination for devotees of architecture.

For several decades in the middle of the 20th century, internationally renowned architects such as Richard Neutra and John Lautner--who is currently the subject of a retrospective at the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles--created audacious buildings in Palm Springs that helped revolutionize the way Americans lived and played. Out went stuffy Victorian parlors; in came sleek, glass-walled structures that blurred the line between indoors and out. The bulk of what these architects designed was residential, which meant the only way to see one of the buildings back then was to have Frank Sinatra invite you over for drinks. Today, though, many Modernist homes are available as vacation rentals, including the long, lean, flat-roofed manse that once belonged to the Chairman of the Board himself.

Renting one of these houses can be an intimate way to get to know the city, to see a side of it that can't be found on the noisy pool deck of a chain hotel...

And then there's Twin Palms. The Sinatra estate, designed by local architect E. Stewart Williams in 1946, has four bedrooms, ample areas for entertaining and one very thick shag rug. "You can sit by the piano-shaped pool and sip cocktails from the retro bar," says Kevin Blessing, CEO of Beau Monde Villas, which manages the house...

Elvis Presley's Palm Springs estate for sale

Palm Springs is the coolest vacation destination in the US. There is so much Hollywood history in our town. Lots of movie stars have or had homes here.

Elvis Presley honeymooned here and later bought a home. It is now up for sale.

Here's the story:

"Elvis Presley's Palm Springs Home On The Market

Some names add cachet to a house years after they have moved on. Elvis Presley definitely falls into that category. Now his Palm Springs home, basically his "Graceland West" is up for sale... The home is located in the foothills of the San Jacinto Mountains in Palm Springs. Elvis lived in the home for almost eight years (he purchased it in 1970) and spent his last birthday there.

The approximately 5,000 square foot home has four bedrooms. Architect Albert Frey designed the Spanish-style stucco home which includes Presley's bedroom suite with two complete bathrooms, a sunken black and red tile tub, and dressing area. The living room has a cathedral beamed ceiling and overlooks the pool. The home is being sold with Presley's original kitchen appliances, a separate indoor sauna and steam room, plus his private covered Jacuzzi...

The property is approximately two acres and is listed at $17 million. For more information about the property, or to request a showing, contact Honey Brooks at 415.435.2585

Palm Springs, CA is tonight's star on the Bachelorette TV show

Palm Springs, California, the star of tonight's episode of the Bachelorette starring DeAnna Pappas. I have never had a chance to watch that show, but I hear it is a cute reality TV show.

Bachelorette airs at 8 pm central/mountain and 9pm eastern/pacific times tonight on ABC.

If you have ever wanted to see some of what Palm Springs looks like, tonight's episode is good. It shows the group taking the Palm Spring Aerial Tram up to the top of Mt. San Jacinto which is the steepest mountain in the US. This mountain is the reason why Palm Springs is a desert and why we are the sunniest city in America as it keeps the rain and clouds away from our beautiful town.

The group also goes on an ATV ride in the open desert north of our town.

Unfortunately they do not stay at our hotel The Terra Cotta Inn clothing optional resort and spa. They stayed at a hotel called The Parker Hotel where they kept their clothes on. It would have been more fun if they had gone topless or nude sunbathing at our resort.

Palm Springs is famous for nude and topless sunbathing. For instance, earlier this year Lonely Planet which is the largest travel guide company in the world picked Palm Springs as one of the 10 best travel destinations for 2008. One of the reasons they gave as to why you MUST vacation in Palm Springs is because you need to try clothing optional resorts (meaning us).

In my opinion The Bachelorette would have had a much more fun episode if they had also shot at our nudist resort and showed DeAnna Pappas and the crew skinny dipping at The Terra Cotta Inn. We have already had a Travel Channel episode shot here and a Canadian Travel show called Insider Travels shot here, why not Bachelorette?

If you want your best, most fun vacation, give us a call at 800-786-6938. Visit our site at http://sunnyfun.com To learn more about the beautiful city of Palm Springs visit http://palmsprings.com

Hope to see everyone in Beautiful Palm Springs!

Above is a picture of the star of the Bachelorette TV show DeAna Pappas.

Hotel Zoso in Palm Springs up for auction from bankruptcy court

Hotel Zoso earlier this year filed bankruptcy and are now up for auction. Opening bid is only $25 million. Such a bargain.

They opened maybe 2 years ago as one of the "trendy" new hotels of Palm Springs. Something tells me you need more than "trendiness" to make it here in town.

We've been here 12 years and have the 2nd highest occupancy rate of ALL hotels in Palm Springs

You can read guest comments about Hotel Zoso at http://tripadvisor.com
